Has CMS expanded its list of covered professional telehealth services?
Yes. On October 14, 2020, CMS announced it would be adding 11 additional CPT and HCPCS codes to its list of covered professional telehealth services. The codes reflect certain neurostimulator analysis and programming services, as well as cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation services. For your convenience, we have listed the codes along with their short descriptors below.
Per a press release, CMS states it will begin paying eligible practitioners who furnish these newly added telehealth services effective immediately. As a reminder, services should be billed with modifier 95 appended to indicate that they were furnished using approved telehealth technology (technology that allows for two-way, real-time, audio and visual communication).
It is important to note, that these 11 codes are temporary additions to the list of covered telehealth services and will only be covered when furnished via telehealth for the duration of the declared Public Health Emergency (PHE). To be added permanently to the list of Medicare covered telehealth services, the codes must be evaluated through the traditional rulemaking process.
